Uncover the secret world of an ancient mangrove forest

Chale Island is full of hidden gems and memory making turns, just waiting for you to explore.

Chief among these is the island’s famed saltwater forest, also known as the Gazi Mangrove Reserve. A place of mystery and intrigue, the reserve is accessible by a motorized canoe which ferries you at high tide to the lagoon mouth where five different types of impressive mangroves stand tall and steadfast in the water to form an intricate ecosystem.

Fed by the Mukurumji River, these fascinating trees survive from brackish water and play host to a myriad of fish, mollusks, crustaceans and birds.

A high tide trip takes you into the heart of the forest where a number of sea birds can be spotted, including African Fish Eagles, Palm Nut Vultures, Herons, Storks and Ibis.

Don’t miss the chance to uncover the secret world of Chale’s ancient mangrove forest.

Top 3 spa treatments

Your island spa journey will take you from the frantic pace of every day life to a place of calm and tranquility, leaving you rejuvenated, recharged and awakened.

Here’s our pick of the top 3 spa treatments at Chale Island:

  1. The Sands Signature Journey, a revitalising spa therapy to revive and awaken the senses. Beginning with a welcome tea, followed by a bath soak and body scrub, moving to a body mask and appetizer facial before indulging in a full body massage.
  2. Chai Massage, an uplifting spa therapy based on the healing benefits of Kenyan green tea, hibiscus and liquorice with a welcome tea, foot ritual, body scrub and Swedish massage.
  3. Aromatherapy Massage, an holistic treatment based on the psychological and physical benefits of essential oils, designed to relax the body.

Support and Empowerment: HIV/Aids Awareness

The Sands has long strived to make a positive difference to both our immediate and wider environments.

This approach led The Sands at Chale Island to invite a representative from the Kenya Legal and Ethical Issues Network on HIV and Aids (KELIN), Esther Nelima, to give a special sensitisation training workshops to support and empower our staff.

Locally, HIV prevalence stands at 3.8% as per the 2018 HIV Estimate report, released in December 2018 by the National Aids Control Council (NACC), while stigma and discrimination against people living with and affected by it remains high, at 48% according to the national HIV and Aids summary report from the NACC.

All staff were given the opportunity to attend training which covered awareness on sexual health, STIs and HIV/Aids; signs, symptoms and methods of prevention; the importance of testing, early diagnoses and treatment as well as adherence and disclosure; and legal protection for people living with HIV and Aids through the HIV and AIDS Prevention and Control Act (HAPCA).

It became clear to Ms. Nelima that few people were aware of the realities of HIV transmission, prevention and treatment and that diagnoses does not have to be devastating or a life-limiting. It is hoped that this initial intervention will help KELIN to reach more people within the tourism industry, to ensure those who do not know their HIV status are tested and linked to care and support and to prevent further deaths from HIV related illnesses in the tourism industry.

Individual counseling sessions to encourage more people to talk openly and freely regarding issues related to HIV and Aids followed the training sessions, with further training planned for 2019.
